The
Quartet for
Violin, Viola, Violoncello and Piano was written in 2002 at the
request of the Rembrandt Chamber players. It has four movements;
the duration is about 25 minutes. The piece is dedicated to the
musicians of the Rembrandt Chamber Players.
The first movement is a cantilena in which the string instruments
set the mood for much of what is to follow. Each instrument
picks up on the main melody, gives
its commentary, supported by striking harmonies in the piano which function
as the pillars upon which the work is built.
The second movement breaks with the atmosphere of the first: In fast tempo
and with relentless energy the work contrasts sharply with the more contemplative,
accepting and subdued nature of the first movement.
The third movement, perhaps the darkest of all the movements, delves into
the depths of atmospheric writing: A nocturnal mood dominates, highlighted
by extensive
use of harmonics in the piano and soft, complex and dense harmonies, developing
towards a climactic open string sonority.
The last movement once again contrasts sharply: Virtuoso gestures in all
instruments break away from the stark mood that dominated the piece to this
point. The piece
grows in intensity culminating in a climactic return of the opening movement.
